LA Times Poll Results

In a recent poll covered by the LA Times, Senator John McCain, once the favorite for the Republican Presidential Nomination, has fallen in the minds of GOP voters. In this recent poll, former New York Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani leads the field and following him suprisingly is Actor and former Senator Fred Thompson. Thompson who has yet to even declare for presidency has come on strong lately.

Personally, I believe that McCain is losing ground due to support for the Iraq War.

Initially against the war and Bush's policies in Iraq, McCain has done an "about-face" and now is a strong proponent for the war. This along with his failure to condemn the statement made by radio host Don Imus about the Rutgers Ladies Basketball Team (see below), I believe hurt his image with many voters.

I disagree with you. Conservatives still support the Iraq war. These days; it is pretty much the only thing that differentiates them from liberals.

This stems largely from McCain's history as a "maverick," as he is painted in the media time and again. He breaks from the Republicans on many things, but not usually in a way that comes across as moderate, but rather in a way that just downright frustrates conservatives. You don't keep position in polls by playing games with your base.

Conservative writers I've seen usually have more regard for Lieberman as a person than they do for McCain as a person.

After reading your post, I think you've misunderstood me. I did not say that conservatives were against the war, just that McCain had flip-flopped in favor of it. And because of his flip-flop, he lost many "on the fence" voters who are not in favor of the war.
